Career Fairs: Not a Thing of the Past

In this day and technological age, recruiting efforts (like career fairs) have become more and more automated. Several articles lately express that recruiting is a dying field because technology allows companies easy access to a diverse candidate pool. While I will not disagree with that, I will say that it does not have the same effect/outcome as face to face interaction that you may gain at an event like a career fair.

During the recruiting and interview process we look for candidates who showcase our core values and we ultimately use it as our number one recruiting tool.  

Attending career fairs gives Vizion an advantage to meet their applicants face to face rather than just on a resume. Many interns and full time employees Vizion has brought onto our team have left an impression on us within the first moments we have met them (something that can’t happen by looking at a resume submitted online). While we do accept online applications, it is often difficult to assess a candidates cultural fit just by reading their resume. It may take many phone interviews and then bringing the candidate in for an onsite interview to be able to make that judgement.

Career fairs can prove to be beneficial for students even if they don’t land an internship. Attending a career fair forces students outside of their comfort zones and puts them face to face with potential employers. This gives them a chance to practice their handshake, communication and interviewing skills. This face to face interaction often allows employers to give students helpful advice about their resume or how to approach other booths at the career fair. The company’s main goal while at a career fair is to find a Rockstar candidate or two but they are also there to guide students on their intern/job search. As a student, do not be afraid to ask for advice; as an employer, do not hesitate to give it.

We may be a technology consulting firm but Vizion does not plan to turn to a completely virtual recruiting process anytime soon.
