May 2019 Highlights from Microsoft Power BI's Features Update
Are you keeping up with all the features that Power BI has to offer?
Do you get frustrated finding the same bugs or issues in your Dashboards or reports? Well, there’s probably a fix for your issues. As we are every month, Vizion is super excited about the monthly Microsoft Power BI features update.
As a preferred Power BI Partner, we like to share what’s most exciting for us and our clients to empower them. This month, the folks at Power BI certainly knew how to please the Power BI community as they continue to hit the mark on highly requested Power BI features and upgrades.
Get Ready to Analyze Performance
Power BI now has a new performance analyzer pane. This new analyzer pane lets you see behind the scenes of what’s happening when your reports are loading. This will allow you to optimize your report performance by analyzing the time it takes to load each visual on a page.
Often we’ll hear that “a report is slow”. More often than not, we’ve found that it’s either because there are too many visuals on the page, or complex DAX queries are being generated by the visuals. With this new tool, you can see where the time is being spent. Examples of what you might discover include:
- DAX query – The length of time it took for Analysis Services to run the query
- Visual display – How long it took for the visual to draw on the screen (including anything like retrieving web images or geocoding)
- Other – Covers time that the visual spent preparing queries, waiting for other visuals to complete, or doing some other background processing
New Filter Pane Improvements
Customization, customization...The folks at Power BI heard the communities voice ands now provides the ability to customize the sort of the filter cards within the pane. In this latest update, you can now drag and drop filter cards within the section it resides in (report, page, or visual) to change the order of the filter cards.
In addition, you can also change the sort direction from the “…” menu next to the header of a given section of the filter pane. Additionally, you can now also theme all the formatting options available for the filter pane and cards.
Chart Update: Line Data Label Position
There are many useful ways to us a Line Chart in Power BI. However, Are you experiencing difficulties using line charts because of the data label positioning? When you have a line or combo chart with multiple lines overlapping with each other, it can sometimes be hard to tell which data label corresponds to which line.
With this months update, Power BI added a new position control for data labels so you can set the labels to specifically show above or below its corresponding line. By having the ability to customize the label position, you can now better differentiate between the two lines on your chart.
The result is that it’s a lot clearer which label goes with which line and ultimately enhances the experience for the report viewer.
These are only a few of the monthly feature updates and Microsoft releases more each month. To learn more about Power BI or how Vizion360 can make business intelligence a successful reality for your organization, contact our Power BI Center of Excellence!
